The Basics of Poker
In the game of poker, the “call” means to place a wager equal to the last bet or raise in the pot. For example, if the person to your left bets $10, you would say “call” and place that same amount of cash or chips into the pot. If you do not like the outcome of the hand, you can fold your hand and watch the game from a distance. In most cases, cashing in is the last option, and there are a number of reasons for this.
Generally, a full house is the best hand in the game. A full house is a combination of three cards of one rank and two of another rank. A flush is a set of 5 cards of the same rank, which can be in any order. Straights are the second best hand in poker and are comprised of five cards of the same rank or suit. A straight is a five-card sequence of the same rank, whereas a three-card pair has three cards of different ranks.
The game of poker was first documented in 1829 by Joseph Cowell. In 1829, four players would place bets on which hand had the most value. A deck of 20 cards was used in the game, with five cards for each player. This version quickly spread and was introduced in the US in the 1840s. The popularity of the game caused the use of a 52-card deck shortly after. In the late 19th century, the popularity of the game increased exponentially.
